On September 10, Just as New York Fashion Week begins its week long extravaganza, retailers all across the world's fashion capitals will be joining in Fashion's Night Out to celebrate fashion and most importantly to encourage sales and uplift consumer's dampened spirits. The brainchild of U.S. Vogue's editor Anna Wintour, Fashion's Night Out aims to be a world-wide economic stimulus package, organized by U.S. and international editions of Vogue, involving over 700 stores across the fashion globe to lure shoppers back into stores and put a stop to the deep discounting which has plagued retailers ever since last Thanksgiving when the economy took a nose dive.
As reported in WWD,'fashion is the second-largest sector of industry in New York City—the headquarters of more than 800 fashion companies employing 175,000 people and generating $10 billion in total wages.' The city's fashion district has suffered huge job cuts and business losses, and retailers-with the support of Mayor Bloomberg-are hoping that New York City's evening of fashion will be just the boost it needs, with more than 100 participating stores staying open until 11pm, with enticing in-store celebrity and model appearances (Mary-Kate & Ashley are rumored to be stopping at Barneys), free cocktails, music, makeovers, and sweepstakes galore. Sounds like a party (albeit a good one) to me, so see you there!!
