Paris Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2011 Fashion Week: Christian Dior

Paris Haute Couture is here! The fashion week all couture lovers can't wait for has arrived as we gladly spend the next couple of days oohing and aahing over some very delectable confections of fabric! Here are some photos from the first Christian Dior show sans John Galliano, who has since been replaced as Creative Director by the design team's talented Bill Gaytten. I love the playful headpieces, bright dancing colors, painterly influences along geometric lines, textures, patterns...No one, least of all me, will forget Galliano's spectacular ode to flower power last season, but if this new collection is anything to go by, long time design team member Gaytten is already doing the Galliano/Dior legacy proud...

Dior Fires John Galliano

Paris Fashion Week kicked off earlier this week in the wake of shocking charges against designer John Galliano. The troubled creative genius who's wowed fashion crowds since 1996 as chief couturier of womenswear at Christian Dior, was suspended from his post on Monday after making alleged anti-Semitic remarks to a couple at a bar in Paris. It wasn't long before the reality of Galliano's prejudiced nature became chillingly clear when a cell phone video surfaced a few days later showing an intoxicated and slurring Galliano stating "I love Hitler," followed by several further disgusting statements. Galliano was fired from his post at Dior, effective Tuesday, and rightfully made an example of to a disbelieving fashion community. At this point in time rehab will only address Galliano's alcoholism, and not the ugly hatred that resides deep within. As a person who is proud to be Jewish I am utterly disgusted by Galliano's remarks, and his behavior should be absolutely condemned. Let us take this opportunity to remember that anti-Semitism is never acceptable and will never be tolerated under any circumstance...

Christian Dior Couture Spring 2011

Where would Haute Couture be without the artistic genius of John Galliano? No where near as fabulous...Galliano's ladylike confections for Christian Dior Spring 2011 were a phenomenal ode to fashion illustrator extraordinaire Renee Gruau, whose commercial work is best associated with the house of Dior. Aaah the graduated layers of frothy tulle, exaggerated full skirts and painted gowns, elaborately simple headpieces, painted on eyebrows and shiny red lips. I'm gleefully exhausted just thinking about the amount of work Dior's seamstresses and pattern makers put into this gorgeous collection...
